More about Pluto
Pluto has an orbital period of 248 years. Since it is elliptical, it does not stay in each sign the same amount of time. It varies between 10 and 30 years in a sign. In EA, we refer to those born with Pluto in a particular sign as belonging to a generation which shares certain characteristics. When we refer to Pluto generations…they are not of equal duration and so are not ‘true’ generations, which are generally perceived to be 20 years long.
We currently have seven Pluto generations on the planet at the same time, one reason why life is so complex. Each generation has certain lessons to learn so that humanity can continue to evolve. The children of parents from one generation will, in a sense, live under the
legacy of their parents. The children will do what the parents could not or live
out the unfulfilled hopes and dreams of the parents.
For example, my mother, who saw The Wizard of Oz when it first came out, wanted to sing and
dance like Judy Garland. The circumstance of her childhood made that an impossible dream. So, when she had a daughter, she named her (me) Judy and for the first few years of my life, forced me to take dance and music lessons….hoping to make me the person she wanted to be.
The oldest people alive at this time are part of the Cancer generation. They sought security, family values, and tended to be unwilling to rock the boat. There were strict gender assignments and many stereotypes related to this issue developed: Marlboro Man and Betty Crocker. Family life was supposed to look like Leave it to Beaver.
Society as a whole also reflects Pluto’s placement in a given time period. Social Security, Unemployment Insurance and other safety net programs developed during the period when Pluto was in Cancer.
Along came the Pluto in Leo generation, composed of what are generally called ‘the baby boomers’ who, in their twenties, blew everything wide open. The rock star was born. The need to ‘do you own thing’ etc. Of course, the parents of this group were shocked and appalled. This
is often the story between one generation and another.
The Pluto in Leo generation opened the doors and questioned everything in a relentless need
to manifest their creativity – one of the primary lesson of this group. The term ‘generation gap’ arose between the Pluto in Cancer parents and the Pluto in Leo children…the flower children.
Pluto by sign and house placement indicates your soul's purpose. During these challenging times when most of us are feeling lost at sea…your astrological chart is a navigational chart…pointing to where you are headed and giving clues about how to get there.
