New moon in Capricorn 2014

In general, New Moons are opportunities for new beginnings. At the end of the year, it might seem odd to think of new beginnings. This New Moon occurs a couple of hours after the Solstice. Dark of the Moon, Return of the Light.

In addition to the Sun and Moon in Capricorn, we have Venus, Pluto and Mercury in Capricorn on this New Moon. The innermost and the outermost planets. And they all are in orb of being square to the lunar nodes in Libra and Aries. Stephanie Austin says that “the spiritual task of Capricorn is the development of responsibility, resourcefulness and integrity.” Learn to see your life as filled with opportunities for growth and learning.

Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, represents boundaries, structures and form. We are encouraged to find an appropriate container for our creativity, ideas and inspiration in order to bring something into manifestation. We may have loads of ideas but until and unless we put them into some form, they remain in our own imagination. You may decide this coming year to learn a new skill that will become that container. Follow the crumbs left on your life path into the little house in the woods where transformation takes place. Where we are cooked and changed.

This happened for me this past year. I had taken up knitting and crocheting again after a few years of not doing it. One day in a local craft store, while searching for a new crochet pattern book, I came across a book on Soutache Jewelry. When I opened that book a magical world appeared. I was entranced. I continued to think about that book and the jewelry depicted there. I did some Internet searching a discovered a new world. I was fascinated. Already possessing boxes and bins of yarn, dozens of pattern books, and loads of craft supplies, I said “No way,” to this new craft which would require a whole new set of things. It haunted me for months. I dreamt about it. I saw visions of ‘my work’ in shop windows. Finally I surrendered. I am developing my own line. I was in a juried craft show last weekend after only being into this for 5 months. My soutache website is www.silkroadsoutache.com

My point is that if you follow what delights and fascinates you, you may just find your ‘way’ into something you could never have imagined. There are so many things to do, directions to take. No reason to give up and be depressed. While you may have no idea what’s next in your life, if you are willing to be surprised, to stay in ‘not-knowing’ for a while, to remain open to possibilities, then to act on your inspirations, you may find yourself with a whole new life.

This New Moon corresponds to the ingress of the Sun into Capricorn also known as the Winter Solstice. Solstice means standing still and in fact the Sun appears to stand in the same spot for 3 days before beginning its journey back to the high point in the cycle. It is the period of the shortest days, longest nights and signals the ‘official’ beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere.

I see this time as best served by going within, reviewing the past year’s successes and failures and then developing goals for the coming year. This usually culminates in ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ that most people forget about after 2 or 3 months. A good time to look at where you’ve been and where you want to go.

In addition to all the planets in Capricorn on the New Moon, Uranus, retrograde since July 21, goes direct minutes before the solstice, so there is a lot going on that day! When planets have been retrograde they seem to intensify whatever energy they represent so that when they go direct their influence on us is heightened.

There seem to be many contradictory forces operating simultaneously, much like planets in difficult aspects. The challenge therefore is to find a way to synthesize, to provide what is known as ‘third force’. Outside the box. Not ‘either/or’, but ‘both/and.’ New ways of seeing beyond black and white; yes or no. How can we learn to work together despite our differences? How can we celebrate diversity while working together on common issues.

This is so both on the global level and the personal level. One way that I am developing personal integrity is to learn to say “No,” when people want me to do more than I originally committed to do. I have learned to keep things simple and direct. Clear communication is best. It is easier to add more tasks when you complete the ones you have agreed to do, than to take on too much, then try to get out of it.

For many, the ‘holiday season’ presents overwhelming stress as they try to make everyone happy (except themselves), because they want to be loved or appreciated. They run around shopping for the perfect gift, spending way too much money and end up getting sick Christmas Eve so their holiday is ruined. If you are one of these people, I want you to take breathing breaks. Stop what you are doing and take a moment to breathe. Look around at where you are. Say to yourself, “I am here and everything is okay.” If you don’t learn to be present, you will miss most of your life as you live in the past or the future. The only thing we have is the present moment and if you miss that it’s gone.

Full Moon in Gemini 2014 - Become a Squatter

Finally got a break in my jewelry making routine to write my bi-monthly lunar blog post. For those of you who don’t know, I have a new obsession. I discovered soutache jewelry last Spring and it haunted me until I surrendered and started making it. Neptune on my Moon in Pisces, Jupiter between my Pluto and Saturn in the 12th house, Uranus opposing my natal Neptune and Pluto transiting my 5th house. I have been following where my creative imagination takes me. I will be in a juried show December 13th and 14th.  All the pieces I planned to make are done. I have 11 days to make more if I want.  Go to: http://www.goddesscraftsfaire.com/

When Jupiter went into Leo, I thought my creativity would come out in writing…but that was my brain talking. My heart wanted to create beauty. Some of my work is on my new website www.silkroadsoutache.com . More to follow as I get more photos made.

So here we are with the Full Moon in Gemini on December 6th. Full Moons represent the peak of a lunar cycle, where intentions set during the dark of the moon, ie the New Moon, are, hopefully, realized. Did you set intentions? How is it going? For myself, I planned to have completed a certain number and type of jewelry pieces and I’m happy to say I am on schedule. Now I have a few days to either make more or not. I have choices.

A friend of mine recently said “discipline is freedom”. I can see that this is true. I admit, the last few days I have felt like I was dragging myself to the finish line. I had so much resistance to completing the project. I had a constant inner dialog going about it.

Of course, as a Sun sign Gemini with Virgo rising, I am used to this to some extent. In the past the inner battle was about studying for an exam or some other odious task. But this time it was about something I love! Still I felt that same inner fight. I even felt nauseous, headachy, etc…the body fighting back against my heart’s desire!

I have been observing this process of sabotage for some time. What is it in us that sets goals then does everything we can to avoid completing them? Gurdjieff, a spiritual teacher of the early to mid-20th century, said that we are made up of many “I’s”. The inner struggle is due to the fact that we are not united on the inside. The various “I’s” compete for dominance.

In his system, we have many brains situated in different parts of our being. There is an emotional brain, a physical brain, a mental brain. They all want to be in charge. When you want to go out, the physical brain might suddenly develop a migraine making it impossible to go to that party ‘you want to’ go to. The best we can do is learn to observe ourselves and identify these “I’s”. Figure out who is talking and what it wants. Sometimes a Lifesaver is a lifesaver. You can satisfy your instinctive or your emotional centers temporarily with a tiny piece of candy. There are lots of jokes about how the head, heart and genitals all have different needs in relationship, but this is true in every aspect of our lives.

Once we realize this multiplicity of intentions…each “I” having a different idea of what it wants, we can begin to get them to work together. For example, in order to get something accomplished, you might have to set up a contract with your body that when such and such is completed, you will treat it to a hot bubble bath, but right now, you have work to do. Negotiation does work, but you have to be skillful about it. What works one time, probably won’t work forever. You have to learn to be like Coyote the Trickster. You also have to treat yourself as if you were a lover you are trying to woo. Flowers one day, candy the next. Surprises and treats. But you also have to be stern at times. “Look, I know you are unhappy right now, but we gotta complete this task. I promise a reward at the end.” Set limits even to work. Let Saturn be your friend. “I will work on this for 1 hour, then take a break, go for a walk, eat, etc.”

Stephanie Austin in her article about this Full Moon in the Mountain Astrologer, writes that we need “a dimensional shift in conscious from duality to unity” in order to solve the myriad problems we face. I hear that, but, how can we see the Oneness of Creation when we ourselves are not unified? We are constantly at war with ourselves. We can’t get through one hour without contradiction. One part of us wants to eat right, the other wants a pizza with double cheese. One part wants to learn French, the other wants to watch TV all night. How can we even begin to think about the Oneness of Creation? This is the Great Jihad that is written about in the Qur’an. The struggle with oneself. Struggle with others is the Lesser Jihad. If we spent more time dealing with our inner demons, most, if not all outer struggle would end.

During this Full Moon, the Sun will be trine Jupiter in Leo and Uranus in Aries creating a giant kite with the Moon at the upper tip. Mercury is within one degree of the Sun. We will also have Pluto and Uranus forming the 6th of 7 exact squares in a week.

I would say that we have a lot of creative Fire to help us think outside the box when trying to solve our problems. An opportunity for ‘brain storming’.

I want to make one comment about the recent events here in the US around the shooting of Michael Brown and the failure to indict the cop who killed him. You can’t gain acceptance by making people more scared and angry. You cannot force people to accept you. The worst thing we ever did in this country was allow slavery. We are still living with that legacy today. That being said, the corporations who run this country, and the world for that matter, love it when we are all fighting each other. They will find a way to make money off our misery. They will co-opt the battle. They will feed the battle. They don’t want us to get along as they know what a force we are when we work together. Our best path is to find ways to opt out of the system. Forget about their stinking jobs. There’s plenty of work to do. Grow a victory garden. Don’t sit around and wait for the system to help you. That’s another form of slavery. Ever heard of the expression “wage slave”? Who wants to succeed in that world?

On KPFA yesterday I heard about all the people squatting in Detroit. There are so many abandoned buildings and homeless people, the city government can’t deal with it. As long as the neighbors don’t complain, they just let them stay there. The city doesn’t have the resources to get them out. Living without water or electricity, they cook on barbeques, grow their own vegies and live without money. This is a vision of our future folks.

Detroit, built to house the people who worked for the auto industry, was abandoned when the corporations decided to move to other countries where labor is cheaper leaving the people high and dry. This is happening all over the US. Meanwhile, providing ‘jobs’ in places where people are living at a lower standard, those people begin to have expectations based on their new found wealth. They start getting used to the things money can buy and actually become more helpless as a result. They move off the farm to work in a factory, forget how to grow and process their own food and become dependent on that paycheck. When they fell confident enough, ‘empowered’ they will ask for higher wages and the corporation will have to find another cheaper place to relocate.

The Uranus Pluto conjunction of the ‘60s that is now being challenged in the on-going square reminds us that all that we strived for, fought for, protested against etc. is up for review. The revolution was co-opted by the corporations because we almost won. They started making hippie beads and bell bottoms and selling them at Macy’s. They made a joke out of it. They plastered the walls with flowers and made a mockery of all that we stood for because we were having an impact on society. We were changing things and they feared that if we won….we wouldn’t buy their crap anymore. We would set up co-ops, barter, grow our own food, make love and not war, meditate, and love each other. Many of the programs that make life better today for more people, had their origins in the ‘60s. The Women’s Movement, Gay Rights, Civil Rights…etc. all made big strides in the ‘60s.

Don’t let them control you through fear. Human beings lived thousands of years without ‘jobs’. All of these things are man-made constructions. In Evolutionary Astrology, Sagittarius represents Natural Law – Nature as contrasted with man-made law. With Sun, Venus, Ceres and Mercury in Sagittarius all part of that Grand Trine in Fire we will find more meaning in our lives as we break through the limited conditioning we have all received and learn to follow our intuition. Just like the City of Detroit, the system is failing. Become a Squatter! A Nomad (part of the Sag archetype as well). Even if you stay in your house and keep your job… start imagining freedom.
